Former President Donald Trump released a statement on Thursday in remembrance of Dr. Clarence Sexton, who passed away on December 12.
Sexton served as pastor of the Temple Baptist Church and founder and president of The Crown College in Powell, Tennessee.
The former president said Sexton was a “great friend” to his late brother, Robert Trump.
“Dr. Clarence Sexton was deeply loved and respected by the incredible people of Tennessee, and all who were touched by his Life and Ministry. He was a great friend to my brother, Robert, and will be greatly missed. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife, Evelyn, and his wonderful Family,” Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
Sexton’s body was laid in state in the Rotunda on the campus of The Crown College on Wednesday.
In his obituary, Sexton is described as a man who “faithfully served the Lord.”
Since 1967, Sexton served as a pastor at multiple churches, launched a Bible club ministry in local public schools, authored over 100 Christian books and booklets, and initiated hundreds of worldwide ministries.
“When the Sextons arrived in Powell, Tennessee, The Temple Baptist Church was averaging less than four hundred in attendance, but the people were ready to trust God and follow their pastor…Pastor Sexton led the church to survey entire communities for miles around. Thousands of people were invited to attend, and hundreds were won to Christ…People began to attend and join the church from places as far away as Oak Ridge, Lake City, and Strawberry Plains. The Temple Baptist Church became a church on the move for God,” the late pastor’s website says.
Sexton received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee and an Associate of Arts degree from Hiwassee College. He also completed his Masters of Religious Education and Doctorate of Ministry, as well as his Doctorate of Divinity and a Doctorate of Humanities.
The Temple Baptist Church is collecting tributes to Sexton from the community for his family to “treasure and enjoy.” Those who have a favorite memory, lesson from, or tribute to Sexton are asked to email it to [email protected].
